Borussia Dortmund have beaten Manchester United in the race to sign Jude Bellingham, with the German club expected to announce his arrival in the coming days for a fee of £20million, according to ESPN.

Bellingham has also been linked with a move to Chelsea in recent weeks, however it seems he has his eyes set on Borussia Dortmund, emulating the footsteps of Jadon Sancho.

The 16-year-old is due to finish the current season off at Birmingham, which concludes at the end of July. Bellingham cannot sign a professional contract until he turns 17 on Monday, 29th June.

The £20million fee is set to be a ‘training compensation’, similar to the one they had in place for Sancho from Manchester City back in 2018, who joined for a mere €7million.

Manchester United seem to have missed out on one of the most exciting young English prospects and were hoping to land a move for him after inviting him to their Carrington training ground before the COVID-19 pandemic. They also failed to strike a deal in January, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was hopeful they did enough to bring him to Old Trafford.

What has been Dortmund’s incentive for Bellingham to move to Germany is the prospect of playing regular Bundesliga football and also their reputation of nurturing young stars so they are ready for the Champions League, a level Manchester United are not currently at.

It seems this huge move is pivotal to Bellingham’s future and his family would have had a big say in where he ends up as he is at such a tender age.
