It is fair to say that Blues have had an incredibly busy transfer window. Blues have made ten signings before today’s window closing. However, the club have announced an eleventh signing tonight and announced the departure of three players on loan. We look at today’s ins and outs.

IN – Jake Clarke-Salter – Season-Long Loan

Clarke-Salter, who is still only 23 years old, spent last season on loan at Blues. Initially struggling to get into the side, he went on to make nineteen appearances, scoring one goal in the process. He quickly became a fan favourite among Blues supporters and many fans had hoped for his return during the transfer window. Well, they now have their wish!

He rose through the ranks of the Chelsea youth sides but has only featured twice for the Chelsea first team. As well as being loaned to Blues, he has spent time at Bristol Rovers, Sunderland, and Dutch side Vitesse. He also captained the England under-21 side through their UEFA European Under-21 Championship.

OUT – Odin Bailey – Standard Loan

Odin Bailey has re-joined Forest Green Rovers on a Standard Loan until 3rd January 2021.

Bailey, who came on as a substitute in the opening day win against Brentford, joined Forest Green Rovers on a loan deal in January 2020. However, his loan there was derailed after just five appearances and one goal, after he suffered an injury and the COVID-19 Pandemic curtailed the action in League Two.

Bailey, 20, has had a good pre-season at Blues, but with competition increasing in attacking areas, he has found his game-time limited.

Bailey has made eight senior appearances for Blues and memorably netted his first goal for the club with an 89th minute winner against Middlesbrough a year ago, after coming on as substitute.

OUT – Jayden Reid – Standard Loan

Jayden Reid has also departed on a Standard Loan until 3rd January 2021.

Reid, 19, who made four appearances for Blues last season when football resumed after lockdown, finds himself on loan at League Two new boys Barrow AFC. Barrow are managed by former Blues player David Dunn, himself a one-time record signing for Blues.

Barrow have had a tough start to life in League Two, having only picked up three points in five games and currently sitting 21st in the league. Dunn will be hoping that the addition of Reid will give his team a boost of attacking firepower.

OUT – Adan George – Standard Loan

Adan George has also left the club on a Standard Loan, joining Walsall on loan until 3rd January 2021. The Saddlers currently sit seventh in League Two.

George, 18, signed his first professional contract at Blues in July this year and committing his future to Blues until the summer of 2022. He made the step up to the first team at the end of last season and has been part of the senior setup ever since.

His hard work during pre-season was rewarded with a first team debut in the first round Carabao Cup loss to Cambridge United at the start of the season. He then came off the bench a week later to make his League debut in the 1-0 win against Brentford.

Focus Thoughts

Firstly, a massive welcome back to JCS. He was fantastic for us last season and I fully expect him to be at the same level, if not even better. It makes us even more defensively solid, which is never a bad thing.

Also, best of luck to all three of our youngsters going out on loan. I am absolutely convinced these moves are the best for them, to get some solid game time in and keep their match fitness up.

My only disappointment with the window closing is Blues not securing the services of another striker – especially with the amount of games in the league. But all in all, a great transfer window for Blues. Not just the players that Blues have signed, but how shrewd the club has been financially. Our spend on players has been £3.95m, with our outgoing business bringing in approximately £27.75m. That is a net profit of approximately £23.8m.

I would expect Blues will look to bolster the attack in January, unless they can pick up any free transfers between now and then.
