The news many Blues fans have been eagerly anticipating! Dion Sanderson has officially signed on a season-long loan, with Blues beating many teams to get the contract signed and Dion through the door.

The impressive 21-year-old has joined Blues after a 14-year tenure with Midland neighbours Wolverhampton Wanderers. After coming through the ranks at Wolves, making 27 appearances for the U23s, Wednesfield born Sanderson is regarded as a promising young defender with a wealth of talent both off and on the ball.

Sanderson has previous Championship experience, making 10 appearances as part of Cardiff City’s play-off reaching side in 2019/20 season during a 6-month loan spell. More recently, Sanderson joined league 2 side Sunderland on loan for the 2020/21 season. After making an impressive 27 appearances for the Wearside club Sanderson scored his first senior goal and, despite an injury late in the season, was voted Supporters’ Young Player of the Year.

The defender seemed very keen to be at Blues. In his first interview, he said: “I am delighted and so excited. Once I heard the news, I couldn’t wait to get it done. As soon as I came in today, I have just had a big smile on my face. It’s unbelievable to be here.

“I think they have a great team [here] and it’s a big Club. Hopefully, it’s a chance for me to play, to impress the Head Coach and help the team out and fight their way up the table.

“I’m a quick centre-half that likes to play football, technically I think I am very good, but I am aggressive as well and don’t like to give strikers any chances.”

“Everyone wants to play football and be in the starting XI. There’s always going to be competition but as long as it’s healthy competition, then it’s good competition in my eyes.”

Blues gaffa Lee Bowyer spoke highly of the youngster, describing him as a player who “puts his body on the line and is comfortable on the ball”. Sanderson is now signing number 6 under direction from Craig Gardner, after his appointment as Technical Director back in June, as Blues look to bolster their defence.
